![]() ![]() Paustovsky imbued Soviet literature with tender curiosity about ordinary people and loving care for the natural world. The Story of a Life is a dazzling achievement of modern literature. ![]() Taking the reader from Paustovsky’s Ukrainian youth, his family struggling on the verge of collapse, through the first stirrings of writerly ambition, to his experiences working as a paramedic on the front lines of World War I and then as a journalist covering Russia’s violent spiral into revolution, this vivid and suspenseful story of coming-of-age in a time of troubles is lifted by the energy and lyricism of Paustovsky’s prose and marked throughout by his deep love of the natural world. Here the first three books of Paustovsky’s epic autobiography-long unavailable in English-appear in a splendid new translation by Douglas Smith. Eventually expanding to fill six volumes, this extraordinary work of a lifetime would establish Paustovsky as one of Russia’s great writers and lead to a nomination for the Nobel Prize in Literature. ![]() In 1943, the Soviet author Konstantin Paustovsky started out on what would prove a masterwork, The Story of a Life, a grand, novelistic memoir of a life spent on the ravaged frontier of Russian history. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Her husky charisma has since made her a magnet for alt-rock mavericks including Nick Cave, PJ Harvey and Beck. Yet their origins could hardly be more different. Both have weathered addiction, rough handling from the media and the music industry and the challenge of establishing their own artistry in the shadow of famous partners: Mick Jagger and Kurt Cobain, respectively. Marianne Faithfull and Courtney Love are two of rock music’s great survivors. ![]() ![]() ![]() The prize is the hand of the elusive Crown Prince. Does anyone really believe Charles Mason deserved a vigorous defense? How about a man in a jealous rage that the evidence showed brutally stabbed to death his ex-wife and her boyfriend? Maybe the maxim should be, “Every innocent defendant deserves a vigorous defense.” Still, I understand that under our system, we presume everyone innocent until proving them guilty, so I know why that can’t be so.Īnyway, I admit it. ![]() I get it on some level when defense attorneys use the shopworn saying, “Every defendant deserves a vigorous defense.” But that’s hard to reconcile with reality sometimes. So, I’m hard pressed to see a defense attorney protagonist as anything more than an antihero, at best-a main character in a story who lacks conventional heroic qualities and attributes, such as idealism, courage, and morality. After twenty-five years of law enforcement experience, I’m not a fan of criminal defense attorneys, even fictional ones.
